The Peka Urupa |
Urupa Trustees
The State Highway 30 Peka Urupa was administered by the Peka Trustees but on the passing of Mrs. Taki Clarke, only Andrew Kusabs of the original Peka trustee remained in office. He felt that additional trustees were needed to assist with the financing and development of the Urupa. Mrs Clarke had hoped that the Rahui Trustees would accept the roll but either they were not able or not willing to accept that roll. The Tumunui trustees as a group agreed to accept nomination as trustees and the Maori Land Court appointed the following to be trustees.
The trustees are Andrew Kusabs, Don Bennettt, Eria Moke, Willie Waaka, Barney Clarke and Mrs Mereheeni Hooker(nee Clarke)
The gorse, broom and blackberry have been sprayed and are dying. An access road has been bulldozed to the top of the hill and another to open up the flat area midway up the hill. The Tumunui Trust has out laid $10,000 and it seems that more assistance will be needed. It is intended to make an application to the Lotteries Board and the Rotorua District Council for assistance.
Mr David Rankilor a surveyor and engineer, has been engaged to plan the development and as soon as this has been done a meeting of the Hapu with interests in the Urupa will be called to explain the rules and obligations of how the Urupa will be operated. The Hapu involved are Ngati Tuara, Ngatai Kea, Ngati Tumatawera, Ngati Kahu Upoko, Ngati Wahiao and Tuhourangi. Many Tumunui beneficiaries are able to whakapapa to one or other of the hapu mentioned so would be entitled to use the Urupa.
