Welcome to Tumunui Sheepfarm

This 270 hectare property, of which 260 hectares is the effective grazing area, is situated on the north facing steep and rugged slopes of Tumunui Mountain. This land was considered too steep for inclusion in the dairy conversion, which was completed in June 1998.

The Tumunui Sheepfarm is capably managed by Allan and Molly Oakley.

The property is well developed, with good pastures adequately fertilised (by air), with adequate subdivision and stock water supply.

In June 2009, the property was grazing 2900 stock units, comprising 2150 Romney ewes, 1120 ewe lambs, and 45 Romney breeding rams.

The main attributes of Tumunui Sheepfarm are the high quality flock of Romney sheep, the high lambing percentage (140 percent) and wool weights from the sheep.

As a result of these, there is a keen buyer demand for the two tooth ewes sold from the property each year. The wether lambs are transferred to the Trust farm at Atiamuri for finishing.

The woolshed and covered sheep yards, that had prior to 1998 handled many more sheep, is now jointly used by Tumunui Sheepfarm for the normal management on a sheepfarm, and also by South Dairyfarm as replacement heifer calf rearing facilities. This works very well and both Allan Oakley and David Morell are happy with the arrangement.
